The FWFSA is in Washington DC This
Week
Business Manager Casey Judd will be in Washington DC
this week to attend the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee
hearing on Agency fire preparedness. This hearing was originally scheduled
for June 5th but was postponed due to the untimely death of one of
the Committee members, Sen. Thomas of Wyoming on June 4th. He is also
scheduled to meet with key congressional offices to address wildland
firefighter issues in California, Colorado & Alaska among others.
Casey has also been invited to meet with staff from the Office of Management & Budget
(OMB). He plans to discuss the methodology of the Administration continuing
to place a priority on suppression rather than preparedness and attempt
to educate OMB on the FWFSA's position with respect to fire budgets.
It is important to note that the staff person he will be meeting with
is a former federal wildland firefighter and has recently sought out
the FWFSA's opinion on a number of Agency budget related issues.
Casey will also be meeting with OPM and staff from the Government Reform
Committee to discuss the lack of progress being made on the classification
issue. As you may recall, it was the Government Reform Committee whose
actions in June of 2006 helped the Federal Wildland Firefighter Classification
Act be passed by the House of Representatives. Updates from Washington
will be included in the "News & Legislation" section
of our web site. Casey will be available through email during his trip
at cjudd@fwfsa.org.
